Former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien has reflected on the injury troubles that plagued his career, particularly during his time with the Black Stars.
Despite a stellar career that saw him become one of Africa’s greatest footballers, Essien admits that injuries were a constant setback, especially while representing his national team.
Speaking to Joy Sports, Essien recalled the moment his injury troubles began, starting with a serious knee injury during a match against Libya.
“I suffered my first injury while I was playing for the Black Stars, against Libya. That was when I damaged my knee badly. I mean, it happens,” he said.
Essien went on to explain that while injuries were frustrating, they were part of the game, and he has no regrets.
“Most of my bad injuries happened when I was playing for the Black Stars, but who cares? It happens. I do not hold any grudges or anything. I was just unlucky, and injuries are part of the game, so we just have to deal with it.”
“You know, I have no regrets. I think I had quite a decent career, and I always look into the positive side of every situation,” he added.
Essien earned 59 caps for the Black Stars, scoring nine goals. At club level, he made over 500 appearances, becoming a legend at Chelsea.
He won numerous titles, including the Champions League and three Premier League trophies.
In addition to his success at Chelsea, Essien also played for top European clubs such as Lyon, Real Madrid, AC Milan, and Panathinaikos, before retiring at Sabail.
His career was a glittering one, decorated with several trophies, including four FA Cups and two Ligue 1 titles.
