The Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Dacosta Aboagye, has announced the rollout of free dialysis treatment across Ghana starting December 1, 2024. This initiative aims to provide essential relief to patients who struggle with the high costs of dialysis.
The policy will be implemented in 40 selected health institutions nationwide, including private hospitals. These centers will serve as pilot facilities for the rollout, ensuring broad accessibility to patients requiring treatment for kidney conditions.
During a press conference in Accra with head of hospitals and Renal Units , Dr. Dacosta Aboagye highlighted the sustainability of the program, assuring stakeholders that the NHIA has secured sufficient funds to support this initiative which marks a significant step toward improving healthcare affordability and accessibility in Ghana.
He emphasized that the NHIA’s move to include dialysis in its benefit package reflects the Authority’s commitment to addressing critical health challenges faced by Ghanaians and acknowledged the financial burden that dialysis treatment imposes on patients and their families, particularly given the rising cases of chronic kidney disease in the country.
He added that they have been able to manage the sustainability of the NHIS policy and assured Ghanaians by the end of the year 45 dialysis machines will be available for the treatment of dialysis treatment in the country.
