The ministerial nominee for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey has advocated for an integration of Ghanaian family values into the country’s educational curriculum for Ghanaian children to learn from the beginning the Ghanaian family values.
Naa Momo Lartey made this statement during her vetting in Parliament on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.
Although she supports an enactment of a law to legislate the family values, Naa Momo emphasised that this approach would provide a sustainable foundation for the younger generation to understand and embrace the cherished societal norms and Ghanaian cultural values.
“As the constitution stands, and as the voices of the people of Ghana have loudly declared, I cannot go against that.
“Beyond the enaction of the law is to imbibe it into our curricula so that the children will know some of these family values right from the beginning. I think it is more sustainable in addition to a law working,” she said.
The minister-designate further agreed with President Mahama’s suggestion which called for an integration of Ghanaian family values into the country’s educational curricula.
“I stick with what his Excellency said. I think that he did not rule out an enactment of a law to back it but I was saying that for sustainability if it is imbibed in our children from a younger age, it will help,” she added.
Naa Momo Lartey’s remarks come amidst the ongoing national debate on Ghana’s controversial anti-gay bill, officially known as the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill.
The bill which was passed last year in Parliament was not assented to by former President Akufo-Addo as two court cases concerning the bill were not yet determined.
As it stands, Ghanaians are now looking forward to President Mahama for his next line of action concerning the bill.
