National Chair of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Nana Ofori Owusu, has said that there was inconsistency in the communication from the Electoral Commission (EC) to the PPP announcing their disqualification from contesting in the presidential election.
Apart from the inconsistency, he further accused the EC of not giving them the opportunity to be heard and correct the errors on their forms.
“They did not give me the opportunity to correct or be heard,” he said on the Key Points on TV3 Saturday September 21.
The reasons given by Jean Mensa at the press conference were different from the letter they wrote to us, all they said in their letter to us was that they identified several errors and omissions in the forms. This is different from her verbal communications, he said.
“My right has been truncated, they did not even give us a hearing,” he added.
Out of the 24 presidential aspirants who filed nominations last week, The PPP is amongst 11 of them who have been disqualified by the EC. Most of the disqualified aspirants are Independent candidates.
“Following the successful conduct of the Filing of Nominations from the 9th of September to the 13th of September, 2024, the Commission instituted a thorough examination of the Nomination Forms submitted by the Candidates to ensure conformity with requirements as set out in law,” the press release announced.
“The Electoral Commission wishes to inform the General Public that the following persons have successfully gone through the Nomination process and qualify to contest as Candidates in the 2024 Presidential Election,” it concluded.
