One of the key enablers of galamsey is the NDC – Miracles Aboagye

Director of Communications for the Bawumia campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of disturbing the government’s fight against illegal small-scale mining (Galamsey).

In his view, the NDC is part of the enablers of galamsey.

He recounted that whereas the government was fighting galamsey, NDC officials campaigned against the New Patriotic Party (NPP) using the galamsey as a political tool.

In a Facebook post, Miracles Aboagye said “It has become evidently clear that, one of the key enablers of the Galamsey menace in Ghana is the NDC. Clearly, they make the country’s efforts to end this menace a difficult one, when they continue to go into Galamsey sites to encourage the people to commit these criminalities.

“When they continue to assure them to vote for them so they will come to government to protect them and allow them to continue the galamsey, it makes it difficult.”

He added “The sad part of this, is how they come to the public to call our government and accuse government of inability to end this menace, and then they rush to the galamsey sites to encourage them not to stop galamsey. Truly, we have challenges and problems as a country, but it’s becoming increasingly obvious that, one of Ghana’s biggest problem, is the NDC. Unfortunately, we have a democracy and can’t do anything other than managing them.

Vote against the NDC, they are key enablers of Galamsey, they are dishonest and insincere and have no clear plan to deal with this menace other than assure the people of allowing them to even engage more in this illegality.”

He further indicated that his flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has outlined a clear plan for handling this situation by channeling the energies of the people into safe and appropriate mining.

He mentioned the strategies of Dr Bawumia to fight glamansey indlcuing the creation of “Minerals Development Bank to support with financing; decentralized and convenient licensing regime to ease access to concessions by the locals; provide data to make it easy to identify when the gold is, in the land; buy the Mined Gold from the people to grind the country’s reserves through the Gold Backed cedi program to boost the strength of our currency; accelerate the introduction of the community mining schemes to cover more districts; provide more safe mining equipment for the people to enable them mine without negatively affecting our river bodies and forests.”

His comments come in the wake of the blame game between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patritoc Party over the galamesy menace.

There was a heated argument on the floor of parliament on the issue of galamsey on September 3, 2024.

The Majority and Minority Members of Parliament, during the extraordinary meeting of Parliament, blamed each other on the worsening state of the country’s water bodies.

The Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh Dompreh, for instance, accused the erstwhile National Democratic Government of causing more havoc to the environment than the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“If we are to look and investigate both sides of the House (NPP and NDC), I can tell you that the NDC polluted the water more than us. So, let’s get matters straight,” he said.

The Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson indicated that under his government even though security personnel have been deployed to help fight galamsey, the practice is still taking place.

If care is not taken, we may not get water to bath before coming to Parliament tomorrow,’’ he warned.
