Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia delivered a keynote address at the 60th anniversary of the Fetu Afahye Festival held at Victoria Park in Cape Coast.
The event marked the 25th anniversary of Osabarima Kwesi Atta II’s reign as the Oguaamanhene and featured a special appearance by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene.
Dr. Bawumia extended his gratitude to the traditional leaders, the planning committee, and the people of Cape Coast for their warm welcome and the opportunity to celebrate this significant milestone.
The Vice President highlighted Cape Coast’s pivotal role in Ghana’s history as the first capital of the Gold Coast and its contribution to trade, education, and cultural exchange. He praised the Fetu Afahye Festival for its role in celebrating the city’s rich heritage and fostering community unity.
This year’s festival themed, “Celebrating the City of Firsts: Our People, Our Culture,” emphasizes the importance of preserving and honoring Ghanaian cultural identity.
Dr. Bawumia also addressed the progress made in the education sector, emphasizing the government’s investment in education over the past seven and a half years. He noted the impact of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, which “he said “has significantly increased enrollment and improved access to secondary education across the country. The policy has also contributed to gender parity in SHS enrollment and a substantial increase in technical and vocational education admissions.”
He urged the youth to take pride in their heritage and actively engage in preserving Ghana’s cultural traditions. Additionally, he called on citizens to participate actively in the upcoming elections, stressing the importance of making informed choices that shape the nation’s future. He advocated for peaceful and respectful dialogue during the electoral period.
Dr. Bawumia commended the Oguaa Traditional Council and the people of Cape Coast “for their successful organization of the festival. I encourage the youth to continue their communal efforts and I assure them of the government’s support.
