Ghana’s chances of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations are hanging by a thread after a disappointing 0-0 draw with Sudan in Accra.
Black Stars, who failed to capitalise on multiple clear scoring opportunities, now face a tough path ahead to avoid missing out on the tournament for the first time since 2004.
With only two points from three games in the qualifiers, Ghana must win their remaining matches to keep their AFCON hopes alive.
The Black Stars have now gone winless against Angola, Niger, and Sudan, putting them in a precarious position in their group.
Black Stars on Thursday afternoon created plenty of chances but struggled with finishing. Captain Mohammed Kudus, Inaki Williams, Antoine Semenyo, and Fatawu Issahaku all had opportunities to break the deadlock but couldn’t find the back of the net.
Sudan’s goalkeeper, Mohamed Mustafa, had a relatively straightforward day, as most shots were directed straight at him, while some, like Issahaku’s effort, sailed well over the crossbar.
Sudan celebrated the result, an important achievement led by their coach and former Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah. Meanwhile, the Black Stars are left to regroup quickly before facing Sudan again on Monday in Libya. A loss in that match could end Ghana’s chances of making it to the AFCON in Morocco next year.
It’s a sobering moment for the Black Stars, who must now dig deep to keep their qualification hopes alive.
