Five talking points from Ghana Premier League matchday 6

Matchday six of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League (GPL) served up some interesting results, with Hearts of Oak back to winning ways, while defending champions Samartex had their game against Nsoatreman rained off.

3Sports takes a look at some major talking points.

Hearts of Oak back to winning ways

When Young Apostles Samuel Prempeh scored a stunning overhead kick to equalise for the hosts in Wenchi against Hearts of Oak, the game looked to be heading for a 1-1 draw until Hamza Issah’s last-gasp winner.

Issah’s instinctive strike put Hearts of Oak ahead and sealed all three points for the visitors.

The win would do Hearts of Oak’s confidence a world of good after playing out two goalless stalemates on the back of their first league victory against Bechem United on Matchday three.

Most importantly, Hearts of Oak move up to 8th on the league log with 8 points, alleviating the pressure on head coach Aboubakar Ouattara.

    Accra Lions tread cautiously

Accra Lions are yet to hit their stride in the ongoing season. Lions’ 1-1 draw against Berekum Chelsea on Saturday was a testament to how the Accra-based side have struggled for points this term.

Lions have now managed to pick up five points in their opening six games, which is their joint-worst start to a league season after six games.

Lions, however, will take solace from finishing second last term after a similar start as well.

Heart of Lions in unfamiliar territory

Goals have been difficult to come by for Heart of Lions. After their 0-0 stalemate against Vision on Saturday, Hearts of Lions have now failed to score a goal in their last three league games, an unwanted statistic which last befell them in November-December 2023.

Prior to their recent struggles in front of goal, Lions had scored in 11 successive league games. The Kpando boys will hope to find their bearings right in order to increase their eight-point tally.

    Golden start for Bibiani GoldStars

After six League outings, Bibiani GoldStars are yet to be defeated, winning three and drawing three. Their breathtaking start has them at the summit of the league with 12 points, albeit dropping two points over the weekend against Nations.

Gold Stars, who finished 11th last term, will be hoping for consistency as they aspire to improve last season’s league finish.

    Reality befalls Dreams FC

Dreams have been subjected to pain-gripping results this term. The Still Believe lads are 17th on the league log, with their three points – bar Legon Cities – the worst in the division.

After six games, Dreams and Legon Cities remain the only winless sides, with three defeats and three draws for Dreams.

Dreams, CAF Confederation Cup semifinalists last season, will look to overturn their fortunes.
