Galamsey fight: You need a whole battalion to succeed – Nyaho-Tamakloe

Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, a founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed disappointment with President Nana Akufo-Addo’s approach to the ongoing fight against illegal mining, known as galamsey.

According to Dr. Tamakloe, the president’s recent remarks reflect a tendency to deflect blame rather than take decisive action.

Speaking on the issue on Ghana Tonight with Alfred Ocansey on October 15, Dr. Tamakloe argued that the battle against galamsey should be fought with a a purely military operation.

“This is not an operation that a single company can handle. To achieve success, you need an entire battalion,” he stated, emphasizing the need for a robust military presence.

He called for the complete transfer of responsibility to military commanders, noting that with clear objectives and no political interference, the military could make a significant impact within a week.

Dr. Tamakloe stressed that politicians should stay out of the operation, as galamsey is a national issue that transcends party lines.

He also urged the government to address the root causes of the problem, pointing to surface mining as a key contributor to the environmental destruction.

Dr. Tamakloe recommended declaring a state of emergency over rivers and forest reserves, regardless of existing mining licenses, to protect these natural resources.
