‘You’ll hear my position on Free SHS when you stop sleeping’ – Mahama replies Akufo-Addo – My XYZ online

The Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama taken a direct jab at President Nana Akufo-Addo over the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy.

President Akufo-Addo, recently on a tour of the savannah Region, questioned Mr Mahama’s commitment to the pro-poor programme, suggesting that the former president has been inconsistent on the education policy.

The president challenged Mahama to clarify his stance on the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy.

But speaking at a campaign rally in Ningo-Prampram during his tour of the Greater Accra Region on Thursday, October 17, Mr Mahama suggested that the president might be “sleeping” or absent from the country.

“When you stop sleeping, you’ll hear clearly my position on Free SHS,” Mahama said while responding to Akufo-Addo.

“I have made it clear that there are implementation problems with the Free SHS because there is no dedicated source of funding, parents are also not happy with the double track system, also the quality of food the children are being given is not good, and so I have said that the NDC is coming to power and fix these three things,” he added and asked Akufo-Addo to go for tapes of what he [Mahama] has been saying about the policy.

He added that the next NDC government will tackle the implementation challenges of the Free SHS programme by establishing a funding source for it.

He also reiterated that the next NDC government will expand infrastructure in various second cycle institutions to address infrastructure deficit and also include private schools.

Mahama is expected to touch base with residents of Kpone Kamamanso, Tema Central and end day one in the Tema East constituency.

During his rounds, Mr Mahama will engage in a variety of activities, including community engagement programmes, interactions with key stakeholders in some communities, and discussions with players in both the formal and informal sectors.
