Declaration of four seats vacant: I am scandalized by Supreme Court ruling – Ayariga

Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga has disapproved of the ruling by the Supreme Court to halt Bagbin’s declaration of four seats vacant.

The lawmaker in an interview on TV3’s KeyPoints was not pleased with the conduct of the Supreme Court Judges to stay execution of Bagbin’s ruling.

“I am scandalized. I am sad because I am one of those who sat on the Appointment Committee to vet some of them to be Judges and I assume that they understand the constitution,” he said.

According to him, the four MPs from the onset of their decision knew they had violated the constitution and showed no interest in the matter because they absented themselves from Parliament on the day the declaration was made.

“They were not there because they know they had violated the Constitution. Where have they complained that they were not heard, they did not want to be heard because they knew what they had done.”

Mr. Ayariga described the ruling by the Apex Court as a violation of Article 115 of the 1992 constitution.

“The court violated provisions of article 115 which violation states that no one shall interfere in the proceedings of Parliament…I think that this is the most flawed conduct by the Supreme Court and it is embarrassing,” he added.

Speaker Alban Bagbin on Thursday, October 17 declared four seats in Parliament vacant after the occupants decided to contest 2024 elections as Independent Candidates.

However, the execution of the ruling by Alban Bagbin has been put on hold pending the final determination of a case challenging the decision at the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court on Friday, October 18 directed  Parliament to recognise and allow the four MPs to continue to serve as MPs until the case is determined.
