Declaration of 4 seats vacant: ‘Minority was on a wild goose chase to become Majority’ – Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah

Government Spokesperson on Governance and Security, Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah has said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was “on a wild goose chase” with their petition for Speaker Bagbin to declare four seats vacant.

The petition was filed by Tamale South MP, Haruna Iddrisu after the three NPP MPs and one NDC MP decided to contest as Independent Candidates in the upcoming elections.

Responding to the matter in an interview on TV3’s KeyPoints, Dr. Palgrave ruled out the declaration made by Speaker Bagbin for the MPs to vacate their seats.

He argued that the MPs did not serve notice to their various parties and that they were going to represent their respective constituents in the next Parliament.

He contended that the Minority in Parliament was only rushing to become a Majority in Parliament.

“I did not find ambiguity in whatsoever and I think that the Minority was on a wild goose chase to become Majority in less than a day. How can that happen in this democracy,” he noted.

It can be recalled that former Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Mike Ocquaye during his leadership declared Fomena seat vacant after the MP at that time decided to contest as an Independent Candidate.

However, Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah believes that such precedence does not apply with the current situation.

In his submission, these MPs unlike the previous situation have not served notice to Parliament and their respective parties yet.

“Precedence cannot apply, this is different from the past,” he explained.
