Ben Ephson, a popular Ghanaian pollster, says he will be surprised should the Electoral Commission decide to do re-balloting for candidates in the 2024 presidential race.
According to him, political parties have invested a lot of resources into the elections and any re-balloting will be a burden to them.
”I will be very surprised if the EC decides to do re-balloting; I think yesterday the EC accepted the Ghana Freedom Party’s re-nomination forms. If there is nobody, number three will be blank. I mean, all the parties, based on their balloting, have done their campaign materials and so on. So, I’ll be very surprised if even the EC decides that the Ghana Freedom Party has withdrawn so they will need to shift the numbers up. Yesterday, the Electoral Commission accepted the forms of the Ghana Freedom Party, so I will be surprised if EC comes back and says that they are listening to somebody else and so they will withdraw or cancel the forms of the Ghana Freedom Party.” He stated.
He again emphasized that the demise of the flagbearer of the Ghana Freedom Party, Akua Donkor, might get the party some empathy votes from Ghanaians.
” I think that Madam Akua Donkor’s votes have mainly come from farmers and so on and I think that they will perform as they have been. Maybe out of sympathy, they might get some one or two votes for the party. But I think, basically, in 2024, it is the two big parties who will pick the chunk of the votes. The rest will be below 1.5% and I don’t believe all the others will get 2%.” Ben Ephson predicted.
The founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party, Akua Donkor, created a vacuum in the 2024 presidential balloting. The Ghana Freedom Party has, however, filed and re-submitted its nomination to replace Akua Donkor with the former running mate, Philip Appiah Kubi alias Roman Fada.
