Manchester United interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy says he is not too concerned over the team’s dreadful goal-scoring statistics.
Manchester United have scored nine goals in the Premier League all season, which is the third-worst record in the division, with only Southampton (7) and Crystal Palace (8) scoring fewer.
Against Chelsea at the weekend, despite creating four big chances, United managed to find the back of the net once through a Bruno Fernandes spot kick.
In Europe, the Red Devils’ struggles in front of goal have been evident, as the team has scored five and conceded the same number of goals.
Manchester United, however, have found joy in the League Cup, scoring 13 times in two games.
Irrespective of United’s underwhelming goal-scoring returns throughout the campaign, Manchester United have created the most big chances in the Premier League (25), three more than second-placed Liverpool; a statistic which gives Dutch coach van Nistelrooy hope.
“I don’t agree we didn’t create enough chances. I think if you look at the statistics, we are one of the teams that is creating the most chances, that’s why I said I’m not worried because we creating the chances. And with the talent we have, they are still young, not just the two [ Rasmus Hojlund & Joshua Zirkzee] you mentioned but the others as well; there’s a lot of potential. When results keep coming, confidence will rise and that’s the key thing in scoring goals, confidence,” he said in his pre-Europa League presser
Ruud van Nistelrooy will manage his penultimate game as United boss in the Europa League (his first in Europe for the Red Devils) on Thursday before stepping aside after the weekend’s league clash against Leicester City – for incoming boss Ruben Amorim to take charge.
