Winner of TV 3’s Perfect Match Xtra Season 2, Martin has added his voice to the calls on President Akufo-Addo to save Ghana’s water bodies from the destruction by illegal mining popularly known as galamsey.
President Akufo-Addo in 2017 while giving his address at a two-day workshop on galamsey in Accra for traditional leaders made a solemn promise to stop illegal mining even at the peril of his presidency. “I have said it in the cabinet, and perhaps this is the first time I am making this public, that I am prepared to put my presidency on the line on this matter”.
Despite that promise, galamsey has rather seen a sharp increase with allegations of some top government officials spearheading this menace under the government of President Akufo-Addo.
Notable organisations like UTAG, GAWU, CSOs, Religious Organizations and well-meaning Ghanaians have expressed great worry over the havoc galamsey is wrecking on the nation. Some have organized demonstrations, protests, strikes and other communication forms to call on the government to act appropriately to curb illegal mining yet little to nothing has been done.
Martin who was a VVIP guest on the 3FM Mobile Sunrise Morning Show, 3rd edition was asked by host Johnnie Hughes what he would tell the president if he had the opportunity to meet him.
“I will tell the president to fix the water bodies and preserve them so that we would have water to drink in the coming years and for the unborn children. There should be water for everybody,” he responded.
Meanwhile, the president in his speech at the plenary session at the COP 29 in Azerbaijan mentioned that his administration has implemented the ‘Green Ghana’ project which has ensured the planting of over 50 million trees since 2017 among other interventions all geared towards improving the climate. He added that about 721 hectares of land have been recovered so far.
However, according to Martin, it is one thing saying what has been done or achieved but it is another thing for people to see or experience what is said to have been achieved or done.
“We’ve heard it, but we want to see it because there are two sides to a story; you say it and we see it, then we can say it is an achievement…” Martin stated.
