Political elites have grown into arrogance and selfishness – John Mahama

President-elect, John Mahama has said the political class in Ghana have abused the power given to them by the electorates.

John Mahama noted that arrogance and selfish interests have become the garment of politicians, forgetting that they wield no power without the people.

He made the comment during a thanksgiving service on Sunday, December 15, 2024 at the Assemblies of God Ringway Gospel Center in Accra.

“We’ve practiced democracy since 1992. With time, the political elites including myself whom God has given the opportunity to lead this country, we have grown in arrogance and selfishness and we have believed that the power that we wielded over the people belonged to us ourselves and did not recognize that it was God who gave it to us temporarily,” John Mahama said.

Commenting about the monumental loss of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections, the President-elect stated that it is a wakeup call for political elites to always remember that the electorates elected them to power and can similarly vote them out if they are dissatisfied with the governance.

According to John Mahama, the NPP’s loss is a lesson to his government that he can face similar fate if his government fails Ghanaians.

“So, God has made us know that power belongs to the people but when they have reached their limit, they will show you that power belongs to them and that it is God who has given that power.

“And so just as our colleagues in the NPP might be feeling very pained by their loss, it should serve us a lesson to those of us coming to government that the same stick that Takyi has been beaten with Ghanaian people are reserving it for Baah,” John Mahama added.

The former President cautioned party supporters and other allies that he will not appoint any person who is unwilling to serve Ghanaians diligently and humbly.

“So I have been receiving knocks on my door, text messages from people who are considering themselves for various positions and I just want to warn them that it is not going to be a walk in the park. I you are not willing to serve the people diligently with modesty and humility then don’t come, just stay where you are,” he noted.
