Aston Villa sink Manchester City to deepen Premier League crisis

Aston Villa compounded Manchester City’s woes with a 2-1 victory, leaving the defending champions’ Premier League campaign in tatters.

Jhon Duran opened the scoring for Villa with a composed finish after Youri Tielemans’ inch-perfect through ball, while Morgan Rogers, a former City player, added a second with a clinical low strike in the second half. Phil Foden’s injury-time goal for City came too late to make a difference.

This result drops City to sixth in the table, nine points behind league leaders Liverpool, who have two games in hand. Villa leapfrogs City into fifth, keeping their top-four hopes alive.

City’s struggles are glaring, with nine defeats in their last 12 games across all competitions and an eight-game winless run away from home.

Pep Guardiola, desperate to turn things around, made six changes to the lineup following their derby loss to Manchester United. However, it was another lacklustre performance, with City’s defensive frailties exposed time and again.

Villa, who had won just three of their last 11 league matches, looked rejuvenated. Goalkeeper Emi Martinez made crucial saves, and their attacking threat troubled City’s defence from the start. Stefan Ortega, standing in for Ederson, made some fine saves early on, but it wasn’t enough to prevent another City collapse.
