Ghana defeat Nigeria to clinch maiden trophy

The maiden edition of the WAFU B U17 Girls Cup final concluded at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence, Prampram, on Sunday night as Ghana emerged champions after a nervy 5-4 penalty shootout win against Nigeria.

Both sides headed into the game full of hubris on the back of their impressive performances all tournament.

The deadlock was broken in the first half when Gertrude Amoafo gave Ghana the lead after 14 minutes as the Black Maidens dominated possession.

Five minutes after Gertrude’s strike, Priscilla Mensah gave Ghana a cushion as she doubled the Black Maidens lead.

However, Nigeria handed themselves a lifeline when they scored five minutes from the break to halve the deficit and set up an enthralling second half.

Ghana defended resolutely in the second half as the Black Maidens forced themselves over the finish line.

However, a lapse in concentration 12 minutes from time saw Nigeria equalize.

The match then went the mile and was decided on penalties. Ghana managed to put away all five spot kicks, with Nigeria converting four and missing one.

Nigeria’s sole miss from the spot proved costly, as it meant the Black Maidens were crowned as the inaugural champions of the WAFU B U17 Girls Cup tournament.
