Ghanaian scholar in Saudi Arabia graduates with PhD in Quranic Recitation

A Ghanaian Islamic scholar in Madinah, Royal Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Dr Al- Hadir Abdallah Ishmael, on Thursday graduated from Islamic University of Madinah, College of Quranic Recitation with Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), after he successfully defended his thesis before a panel of judges.

Dr Ishmael becomes the second Ghanaian to graduate in PhD in Quran Recitation from the prestigious University. He has been in university since 2010, under a scholarship programme where he obtained his first and second degrees, before capping it all with the PhD programme.

Quranic Recitation otherwise known as Qira’at refers to the ways or style the Holy Book of Islam is recited in terms of prolongation, intonation, and pronunciation of words.

Dr Ishmael is expected to make an impact with his new knowledge in spreading the teaching of Quran in the different styles in its recitation to align with the standard practice.

Speaking to The Ghanaian Times from his base in Madinah, Saudi Arabia, Dr Ishmael expressed his appreciation and gave thanks to Allah for seeing him through the programme which he said was demanding.

“Today being the day that I defended my thesis, I’m very excited and overwhelmed about this degree bestowed on me. I give thanks to God, my parents, my lecturers who have been supporting me throughout.”

I came to Islamic University of Madinah and I specialised in Quranic intonation, which is the different styles of reading the Quran, what we call Qira’at. The Faculty of Quran is one of the faculties that most students don’t want to join due to the demanding nature of the programme, it offers a lot of knowledge that students are expected to memorise.

I will encourage others to join the faculty because we all know that we need the Quran in our lives .And the Quran directly links us to Allah,” Dr Ishmael elaborated.

“I use this opportunity to encourage our brothers to reach where we have reached today, because our brother, Sheikh Dr Abdul-Razak, was the first person to graduate in the programme, since then , we did not get anyone to get to this level. And, today I join him as the second person to graduate in that programme, I’m wishing our brothers who are studying in the faculty to put much effort so that they will surpass what we have achieved,” Dr Ishmael added.

Dr Ishmael hails from Kumasi in the Ashanti Region and has been studying in the Saudi Arabia over the last 14 years. He currently teaches at the College of Da’wah (Propagation), and College of Science and Technology of the kingdom’s prestigious university.

He initially had his internship at the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah. He also had a stint at the College of Sharia in the same University.
