The Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Samuel Nartey George, has condemned the attack unleashed on the Clerk to the Appointments Committee by its Ranking Member, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin.
Sam George has described as “despicable behaviour”, the accusations levelled on the Clerk to the Committee on Thursday, January 30, 2025.
The Minority MPs on the Committee had accused Gifty Jiagge Gobah of being in bed with the governing NDC because she is a member of the party and has chosen to sideline the Minority on the vetting process.
On Friday, January 31, 2025, before the vetting of the Minister-designate for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minority walked in and marred the process by calling the clerk names for beginning the process without them.
This was after he had accused her the previous day and called her an “NDC clerk” after the vetting turned to chaos, leading to the destruction of microphones and tables at the committee room.
According to the Minority, the same Clerk gave a different treatment to the NDC when they were in Minority, ensuring that they received reports before they were signed, unlike how she is treating the NPP as Minority now.
In a post on his X Sunday, February 02, 2025, the Communications Minister-designate described Afenyo-Markin’s attitude towards the woman as “shameful” and “misogynistic”, adding that he wouldn’t dare do such a thing if the Clerk was a male.
Sam George added that he did not expect such an uncouth behaviour from a leader in a House as august as Parliament.
“I am appalled at the despicable behaviour of @AfenyoMarkin towards Madam Gifty Jiagge Gobah.
“This shameful behaviour is unbecoming of a Leader of the august House. I am absolutely certain he would not have dared to do this to a male Clerk of Parliament,” he stated.
Mr. George reemphasised the need to accord the office of the clerk with the respect it deserves, and called on the public and Parliament as a whole to condemn the act.
The MP further urged the Clerk of Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, to raise the issue formally with the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.
He noted that after Parliament passed the Affirmative Action Law, the institution could not allow such “uncouth behavior” to go unchecked.
“Madam Gifty Jiagge Gobah, I and many more decent people stand with you,” Sam George added in his post.
“Be encouraged and stand strong with your head held high. Your poise and composure even when you were under the barrage of insults is remarkable. Such a role model for our daughters.” Sam George said, sharing some words of encouragement to Mrs Gobah.
