A Kia Rhino truck with registration number AC 1059 caught fire earlier today on the Kumasi-Accra road at Kyekyewere in the Ayensuano District of the Eastern Region.
Fire service teams are currently working hard to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading and causing traffic on the alternative section, Kumasi to Accra.
Eyewitnesses report that the vehicle, which was traveling from Accra towards Kumasi, had been loaded with turpentine and glue before the driver lost control.
Residents quickly rescued the driver and his mate and rushed them to the hospital.
According to Kyekyewere Mbrantiehene, an eyewitness, rescue efforts was daunting.
“This morning, I was at home when some youth called to inform me about an accident. We saw the Kia truck, which was loaded with glue and turpentine. We quickly opened the car and pulled the driver and other occupants out before transporting them to the hospital.”
He added, “We were trying to remove the goods from the vehicle when a fire suddenly erupted. We attempted to stop the flames while calling the fire service. Firefighters from Suhum responded, but they were overwhelmed and had to request backup from the Nsawam Fire Service.”
The injured passengers are currently receiving medical treatment at nearby hospital.
Efforts to fully extinguish the fire are ongoing.
