Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku has come under fire following the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
In an open letter, UK-based Ghanaian sports journalist Rahman Osman has urged him to reflect on his leadership, make tough decisions, and rebuild Ghana football with transparency, accountability, and competent allies.
Dear Kurt Okraku
I hope they screenshot and send you this letter. At every stage of human evolution where a glass ceiling was shattered, people of high standing were always faced with two options: doing what is right or doing what is good for them.
Most people fail this test because they choose what is good for them, but the truth is, doing what is right is always the better choice, as it ultimately benefits everyone.
You find yourself in a position similar to the one Nkrumah faced during the struggle for independence. He had the option of sticking with the UGCC, taking their money, and drinking tea with the colonizers. But he chose what was right—he broke away, faced his fears, and that decision birthed Ghana.
Today, under your leadership, we have failed to qualify for the AFCON. This is one of the darkest periods in our football history, and honestly, it’s not something that hasn’t been coming.
I could go on, but I don’t want to hurt you further. You are an established individual whom I admire for your accomplishments, especially your time at the University of Liverpool and the football business you excelled in. You inspired us all, but now it’s time for you to reconsider your ways. Change the people around you. They are fan fooling you and rarely telling you the truth. It’s not easy but do it. It’s a bitter pill 💊 to swallow but it will heal you. When you’re sick you need those bitter pills.
I understand that you may not want to work with your critics, but we have reached a point where you need to find a balance. You must accept that you have failed to bring back the love and now it’s time to tear everything down and start fresh.
You still have time. Don’t view every criticism as an attack on Ghana football—listen carefully and reflect. The people writing your speeches are doing you a disservice; they don’t reflect your emotions or the atmosphere in Ghana. But if they do, then you have an inherent problem.
Your recent attempt at an apology for the disaster that has happened in Ghana football over the last 20 years was, frankly, laughable. Ghanaians home and abroad are hurt and that is the best you could master- honestly you’re better than that.
Sack Otto Addo. He will understand. You gave him your backing, but he has let himself and the nation down. Don’t reward this monumental failure by keeping him in his position.
Properly apologise to Ghanaians. Restructure the Ghana Football Association with people who are experienced and qualified, even if they weren’t supporting you, their actions will guide you to recover your best self. You need a diverse group to keep you grounded and alert.
My dad used to say every successful person needs enemies- you learn a lot from them than your friends will ever teach you but you need to pay attention first.
Be transparent. You have nothing to lose, you’ve made enough money. Anything extra is unnecessarily greedy and continuing to chase it will lead you to a place you can never return.
I’ll stop here as my train is terminating, but please don’t miss the opportunity that this failure has presented to you. And, just a word of advice: don’t even think about that third term you’re planning—it won’t end well. Just ask Kwasi Nyantakyi.
