In celebration of International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025, the AbibiNsroma Foundation has reaffirmed its commitment to gender equality and social justice with a focus on the theme “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.”
This theme resonates with the foundation’s ongoing efforts to empower women and girls and ensure their full participation in the global transition to clean energy.
According to the foundation, the year 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration, a milestone in the worldwide push for gender equality.
AbibiNsroma Foundation’s celebration aligns with the call to renew global efforts to translate promises into tangible progress, addressing issues like the gender pay gap, improving women’s safety, and recognizing the value of both paid and unpaid care work.
A Global Movement for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment
IWD, celebrated annually on March 8th, is a global movement advocating for gender equality, women’s empowerment, and social justice. This day honors the achievements of women while highlighting the challenges they still face in various sectors.
The 2025 IWD colors purple, green, and white symbolize justice, hope, and purity, reflecting the day’s spirit of empowerment.
Empowering Ghanaian Women in the Energy Transition
As part of the celebrations, AbibiNsroma Foundation emphasized the critical role that Ghanaian women must play in the energy transition, a key step towards sustainable development.
The foundation believes that equipping women with the skills, knowledge, and opportunities to actively engage in the clean energy transition will advance not only gender equality but also the achievement of key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
These include SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).
Dr. Paula Gatsey-Atabudzi, OD, MSc Clinical Ophthalmology, stressed the importance of Ghanaian women in the energy sector.
“Ghanaian women, with their diverse socioeconomic ties, are a major stakeholder in the conversation of Energy Transition. At the markets, factories, hospitals, and homes, our contributions cannot be ignored. We need a fair transition that is reliable, accessible, and affordable with reduced pollution to the world. Life must be better as we transition to sustainable renewable energy,” she said.
Addressing Challenges and Empowering Women for a Fair Transition
Maybel Acquaye, Senior Policy Analyst at ACEP, highlighted the significant barriers that women face, especially in rural areas where access to clean energy remains a major challenge.
She explained that women and girls, often responsible for cooking and heating, are disproportionately affected by harmful indoor air pollution.
This not only impacts their health but also consumes valuable productive hours that could otherwise be spent on economic activities.
“To accelerate action for ‘For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment,’ it is imperative to involve women at every stage of our energy transition,” Acquaye said.
Education and Renewable Energy: Key to Empowering Women and Girls
Mrs. Mabel Frimpong, a Senior High School Facilitator in Tema, stressed the importance of sustainable, affordable energy in education.
She pointed out that many classrooms are without proper lighting, and computers cannot be powered due to lack of electricity, which puts students, especially girls, at a disadvantage.
“Communities without fair access to electricity face inequities that prevent equal opportunities. Affordable renewable energy can address these challenges, recognizing women and girls as the pillars of society,” she emphasised.
Ms. Indeye Seck, Program Officer for AbibiNsroma Foundation, further echoed the importance of a Just Energy Transition. She noted that affordable and reliable energy would open opportunities for women, particularly in rural areas.
“More businesses can sprout, especially for women, who are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change,” Seck said.
She called on all women in decision-making circles to encourage girls to aspire for more and support their growth economically, socially, and academically.
The Role of Education and Mentorship in Empowering Women
Petrine Addae, Consultant at AbibiNsroma Foundation, discussed how empowering women through education provides them with the tools they need to become self-reliant.
“Empowering women through education ensures they can play critical roles in their communities, transforming lives and making a significant impact in society,” she said.
Addae also highlighted the importance of creating safe spaces where women can engage in energy-related discussions and decision-making, further reinforcing the need for mentorship and grassroots programs to help women take on leadership roles in the energy sector.
A Call for Collective Action and Continued Support for Women and Girls
As we celebrate IWD 2025, AbibiNsroma Foundation calls for collective action to break down the barriers that women face in the energy sector and beyond.
The foundation urges the integration of women into every stage of decision-making and policy development, especially in energy projects, to ensure that solutions are inclusive and transformative.
In conclusion, AbibiNsroma Foundation’s celebration of International Women’s Day is a reminder of the need to create a more equitable world for women and girls.
Through collaboration and empowerment, the foundation believes we can build a brighter and more sustainable future for all.
Let’s continue to celebrate the women in our lives and commit to making the world a better place for everyone.
