AI is a powerful educational tool for trainee teachers – Dean of UGBS

Dean of the University of Ghana Business School, Professor Justice Nyigmah Bawole, has emphasized the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a powerful educational tool for teacher trainees.

Addressing the Second Biannual Conference of the Wiawso and Komenda Teacher Training Colleges at Sefwi Wiawso in the Western North Region, he acknowledged that while there are apprehension surrounding AI, similar to the initial fears of computers, its integration into higher education is now essential.

“We must learn how to use AI effectively and guide our students in its appropriate application,” he stated.

Addressing the media on the sidelines, Professor Bawole elaborated on the use of AI, describing it as a supportive tool for students, academics, researchers, and professionals.

He, however, cautioned that AI operates based on the information it receives; and does not possess independent thought.

Prof Bawole commended both Wiawso and Komenda Colleges for their recent upgrade to tertiary status, now functioning as universities.

This advancement, he explains, aligns with their responsibilities with those of other higher education institutions, encompassing teaching, research, and community service.

“Hosting a conference where tutors can present their work reflects the practices of universities, and I encourage them to continue this initiative,” he noted.

Professor Bawole called on other Colleges of Education in Ghana to join in such collaborative efforts, emphasizing that these steps are vital for building the capacity of tutors and enhancing the overall quality of teaching and learning.

The event aimed to equip educators with the knowledge to effectively integrate digital tools, particularly artificial intelligence, into their teaching practices.

Theme for the conference was “Enhancing Quality Teacher Education: The Role of Colleges in the 21st Century.”
