Akufo-Addo must accept that the economy is bad – GNAT President on SONA

The General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has asked President Akufo-Addo to accept that the economy was bad under his leadership.

Reacting to the final State of the Nation Address (SONA), delivered by the President on January 3 in Parliament, Thomas Tanko Musah cited high cost of living and meagre earnings of workers which have been eroded due to inflation under the current administration.

Speaking exclusively to 3news’ labour correspondent, Mr Musah asked the incoming President, John Dramani Mahama, to immediately tackle the economic challenges or risk the anger of Ghanaians.

In the State of the Nation Address, President Akufo-Addo indicated that Ghana’s economy is rebounding strongly. He cited GDP growth of about 7% as at the end of 2024.

The outgoing President also said that Ghana has over $8 billion as gross international reserves.

Despite these economic achievements, the General Secretary of GNAT was dissatisfied.

Mr Musah said, these indicators do not address the challenges Ghanaians have faced under his leadership.

He called on President-elect John Mahama to be quick in tackling the economic challenges.

“So, once you have come in, they are expecting that their economic situation will improve. As we speak now, I tell you nobody will say that the current economic situation is best. We are currently at the IMF we have been there seventeen times and all occasions that we have been there, we have been in a well chair.”

“We are hoping that the incoming president will live up to expectation. The overwhelming support that he got to come into government cannot be lost on him, and whatever he can do to make sure that the twenty-four-hour economy in the education sector, the health sector and all the sectors of the economy is implemented,” he noted.

Mr Musah also appealed to the President-elect to consider engaging the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) and Ghana Employers’ Association (GEA) to create jobs.

“Aside his cabinet ministers, the President must engage the AGI and the Ghana Employerss’ Association because they are the people that can create the jobs for the teeming youth. Look, the public sector is choked, so if the President doesn’t go to these people that twenty-four-hour economy will be difficult,” he stated.

Of a major concern to GNAT is for ex President John Dramani Mahama to also engage the media thrice every year to get feedback from Ghanaians.

“At least every year he should meet the media three times that will give him feedback, this is important because human beings we can be something else. Every human being you are surrounded by three people, one- the wicked people, the wicked people for them they don’t wish you well, the second people that will be around you are selfish people, selfish people for them they always want to use you to get what they want and the last people around are people who are novice, the president must find a way to manoeuvre through all of them,” he advised.
