Ashaiman: 150 residents picked by military released – MP

About 150 out of the 184 individuals arrested by the military in a swoop at Ashaiman on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, have been released.

This was revealed by the Member of Parliament for Ashaiman, Ernest Henry Nogbey.

The MP who confirmed to Power FM said he had seen the released persons  and added that the remaining 30 are still being held in military custody.

“I have seen them [victims] and engaged them,” he said and assured that he would do his best to ensure that the others are released.

The MP also indicated that he is very intrigued that President Akufo-Addo failed to mention the issue while addressing the State in parliament on Wednesday.

Mr Norgbey said he was disappointed the president did not console the bereaved family of the soldier and condemn the attack on innocent citizens of Ashaiman.

Military personnel besieged Ashaiman on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, with helicopters and armoured vehicles, to brutalize civilians following the murder of a military officer, Trooper Sherriff Imoro.

The young soldier was allegedly stabbed in the town on Saturday, March 4, 2023.

Meanwhile, the Military High Command has confirmed authorizing what they call a “swoop” on the Ashaiman township in search of killers of a young soldier on March 4, 2023.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) issued a statement in the morning of March 8, 2023, saying that the action was targeted at killers of a young soldier and not to brutalize residents of the town.

“GAF wishes to state categorically that the military operation, which was sanctioned by the Military High Command, was NOT to avenge the killing of the soldier but rather to fish out the perpetrators of the heinous,” the statement noted.
