Togbe Borbordzi Xevi VII has urged President John Mahama to launch an investigation into the military brutalities in Ashaiman and hold those responsible accountable.
In 2023, military officers rounded up hundreds of Ashaiman residents and subjected them to severe torture following the death of a junior officer.
Addressing the press in Ashaiman, the Battor Mankrado called on President Mahama to ensure justice for the victims by investigating the incident and prosecuting the perpetrators.
“I’m calling on the president to investigate the army commander who commanded his army to beat people in Ashaiman, and disgrace elders because they lost one member,” he stated.
According to him, the military could have handled the situation differently instead of resorting to violence against residents.
“It’s a very bad thing. We shouldn’t disgrace our own country. They do that and put it on the net that they the military of this nation can beat their people.
“We are calling on the president to do something about it. It’s very bad and Ghana must be protected,” he said.
He emphasised that the military’s duty is to protect citizens, not to subject them to harmful treatment.
“We are proud of them because other nations are also proud of them. We love them but the way they behave sometimes is not good.”
Togbe Borbordzi Xevi VII also criticised Nsawam-Adoagyiri Member of Parliament, Frank Annoh-Dompreh for what he described as reckless and inflammatory remarks regarding the Ablekuma North parliamentary election dispute.
The Minority Chief Whip urged members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to firmly support their fellow party members in all political situations.
He asserted that NPP members should unite and support their fellow party members in any confrontation with members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“If you are truly an NPP member and you come across an NPP member in a fight with an NDC member, you should help the NPP member,” he declared.
Togbe Borbordzi condemned the statement as irresponsible and called on the MP to apologise to Ghanaians for inciting political violence.
