Atletico Madrid slip up in La Liga title race after late drama in Getafe

Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid crumbled in the dying embers of their game against Getafe after taking the lead 15 minutes to the end.

Sorloth put the visitors ahead from the penalty spot with his 10th league goal before a bizarre finale saw Atletico give up their lead.

Forward Angel Correa was sent off two minutes from time for a cynical challenge after a video assistant referee (VAR) check before Mauro Ambarri equalised for the hosts.

Ambarri sealed his brace in stoppage time to hand the home side maximum points and a 2-1 win, ending Atletico’s unbeaten run against Getafe.

Atletico had not lost against Getafe since 2011, with manager Diego Simeone tasting his first defeat against Getafe in the process.

Meanwhile, Atletico fans were left cursing their stars after they failed to maintain the one point difference between themselves and league leaders Barcelona, who had their game against Osasuna postponed on Saturday night.

Atletico will now be sweating over the fitness of midfielder Rodrigo de Paul who went off early in the second half, while Angel Correa’s red card means he’ll play no part in next weekend’s mammoth game against Barcelona.

Diego Simeone’s side are back in action in the Champions League on Wednesday, where they face city rivals Real Madrid with a one-goal deficit to overturn.
