Benjamin Azamati, Ghana’s national 100m record holder, has set his sights on achieving success in the upcoming track season.
The major highlight of the 26-year-old sprinter’s season was at the Olympic Games, where he managed to reach the semi-final, becoming the first Ghanaian to attain that feat since 2004 before he was later joined by Abdul Rasheed Saminu to share in that record.
However, 2024 proved to be a difficult season for the Ghanaian who earned an Olympic ticket via ranking, failing to break the 10s barrier.
Azamati last broke 10s a little over two years ago, and in his bid to recapture the spark that led him to become Ghana’s fastest man after running 9.90s in 2022, the former University of Ghana athlete decided to make alterations to his immediate environment.
In August, Azamati announced his decision to team up with John Bolton, a renowned athletics coach who works with US Olympic bronze medalist Fred Kerley.
Azamati believes the decision to switch camps will eventually pay off as the 2025 World Athletics championship looms.
“We looking forward to doing well next year. I’ve had a change of environment and left my coach to another coach, so I’m hoping to do very well next year. You’re also at an age where it is considered to be your prime age in athletics, and so I’m looking forward to run next year to compete for the country,” he said in his closing remark at the Junior Olympics event.
The 2025 World Championships will take place from September 13 to September 21.
