Baba Rahman clarifies he is on break, not retired from Black Stars

Baba Rahman says he hasn’t retired from the Ghana national team, assuring fans that he intends to play again when he feels completely ready.

Rahman, 30, last represented Ghana in the September 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against the Central African Republic, where he faced jeers from some sections of the Kumasi crowd.

However, he insists his absence from recent matches is not related to that experience but rather a need to prioritise his physical well-being.

“It’s a personal decision to take a break [from Ghana] to concentrate on my fitness because I’ve not had a great time with injuries,” Rahman explained to BBC Sport Africa.

“When I joined PAOK last year, I just thought it was wise to stay away a bit from international football to get my fitness back.”

Rahman’s injury struggles have been lengthy and challenging. Between 2017 and 2020, he was sidelined for 999 days after multiple serious injuries, including two ruptures of his anterior cruciate ligament.

He made comebacks for Ghana in the 2021 AFCON and 2022 FIFA World Cup, both of which ended in group-stage exits.

“Fans are asking me all the time to come back to play for Ghana, but I think I need to take care of my health before everything right now,” Rahman added.

“People know about my injury history, and it has really been a difficult few years. I just want to enjoy my club football again, and then I know my international career will take off again too.”

Rahman has been in brilliant form since moving to Greece permanently. He was instrumental in PAOK winning the Greek Super League last season and continues to play an important role for the club.
