Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has lifted the suspension of four Members of Parliament (MPs) who were banned following a clash during the vetting session on Thursday, January 30, 2025.
The altercation, which took place between Minority and Majority MPs, escalated tensions in Parliament. The disagreement reached a head with the suspension of the four MPs, sparking a debate on whether the vetting should continue on January 31, 2025.
In the aftermath of the suspension, Minority MPs walked out, leaving only the Majority to proceed with the vetting of nominees, including MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who had already been questioned for several hours by Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
The suspension was lifted after a review of the incident. The four MPs – Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, and Alhassan Tampuli – are now cleared to resume their parliamentary duties. This decision aims to restore order in Parliament after the disruptions.
The lifting of the suspension followed appeals from both the Majority and Minority Leaders to Speaker Bagbin.
Bagbin stated, “I have lifted the suspension order, effective immediately. The affected Hon. Members are now permitted to enter the House.” He acknowledged that the MPs had complied with the initial suspension orders.
He assured that investigations would continue and that the House would later decide on any further actions.
Bagbin also expressed appreciation for the support of the security agencies.
