2023 AFCON U-20 Qualification Woes
The Black Satellites have struggled to qualify for the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations (AFCON U-20) in recent years. In 2023, the team failed to qualify for the tournament despite being the defending champions (2021 champions), after failing to advance from their group, which included Niger, Ivory Coast, and Burkina Faso in the WAFU Zone B tournament held in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
This was a significant setback, considering Ghana’s rich football history and the team’s previous successes.
2019 AFCON U-20 Performance
In 2019, the Satellites participated in the AFCON U-20 tournament but were eliminated in the group stages.
Despite showing promise, they failed to advance to the knockout stages, after garnering three points and clinching third place in their group.
2017 U-20 AFCON
In 2017, Ghana failed to qualify for the U-20 AFCON for the first time since 2009.
Ghana were eliminated from the final round of qualifying after suffering a humbling 3-1 loss to Senegal’s U-20 team, who ultimately advanced to the tournament’s semifinals.
World Cup U-20 Qualification Struggles
Since their historic 2009 U-20 World Cup triumph, making them the first and only African nation to achieve this feat, the Black Satellites have only managed to qualify for the biennial tournament twice (2013 and 2015) in the last six editions.
Ghana showed significant improvement in the 2013 edition, reaching the semifinals before being narrowly eliminated by France’s U-20 team, who ultimately won the tournament.
Ghana has since then struggle in the World’s most prestigious tournament at the U-20 level, failing to advance past the round of 16 in the 2015 edition and not being able to qualify for the tournament in the last three editions.
Despite the team’s recent woes, Ghana’s U-20 team has a storied history of success on the continental stage, with multiple honors in the past few years.
2021 U-20 AFCON
Following a dismal 2019 U-20 AFCON campaign, where they failed to progress beyond the group stage, the Black Satellites rediscovered their winning form and bounced back with aplomb, defeating Uganda U-20 2-0 in the final to secure their fourth title.
2023 African Games
After failing to qualify for the 2023 U-20 AFCON, the 2009 U-20 World Cup-winners restored national pride by claiming football gold at the African Games, remaining unbeaten with four wins and one draw.
2020 WAFU ZONE B Tournament
Under Karim Zito’s guidance, the Black Satellites edged Burkina Faso 2-1 in the 2020 WAFU Zone B tournament final at Benin’s Stade Charles De Gaulles, securing qualification for the 2021 U-20 AFCON.
After a lackluster European tour, marked by defeats to Switzerland and Germany, the Black Satellite, under Desmond Ofei, redirects their efforts towards the WAFU Zone B tournament, aiming to revive their fortunes and secure a fifth U-20 AFCON crown.
