About 300,000 persons are expected to have been vaccinated by close of the 4-day cholera vaccination exercise which ends in the Greater Accra Region today February 17.
The exercise, which is taking place in three sub-metros of Accra; Ablekuma South, Okaikwei South and Ashiedu Keteke is targeting persons one year old and above, excluding pregnant women.
As the country grapples with the growing cholera outbreak, health officials are racing against time to contain the spread and deaths.
The Effutu Municipality and Agona West all in the Central Region remain the disease hot spot although the Greater Accra Region has the highest number of all confirmed cases.
3news has gathered that, the next vaccination campaign will be held in some selected districts of the Central Region. Since the outbreak of cholera in Ghana, more than six thousand suspected cases have been recorded with over 500 confirmed.
Out of the figure of confirmed cases, the Greater Accra Region has recorded the highest number with over 200 of the cases.
Cholera is a disease gotten from bacteria in contaminated shellfish or water. It can cause mild or severe watery diarrhea that can quickly lead to life-threatening dehydration. It can be fatal if left untreated. It most often spreads in areas without access to clean water or toileting facilities.
