Compensate Lyon with Bayelsa gov ticket, group tells APC

As the governorship elections in Bayelsa, Kogi and Imo states draw closer, a group within the All Progressives Congress, the APC-G37, has called on the national leadership of the party to consider offering a former Bayelsa State governor-elect, David Lyon, the governorship ticket for the state.

Lyon contested and won the Bayelsa State governorship election in 2019 but the Supreme Court nullified his election on the eve of his swearing-in.

The apex court sacked him on the basis that his running mate then, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo, presented  false information to the Independent National Electoral Commission in aid of his qualification for the November 16, 2019 governorship election in State.

The APC-G37, said on Thursday that the APC could compensate Lyon for the trauma he went through by making him the governorship candidate ahead of the November 11, 2023 governorship election in Bayelsa State.

The group also warned against money politics in the primaries to pick the APC governorship candidates for Bayelsa, Imo and Kogi states.

The group made call in a statement signed by its chairman, Jones Erue, and  secretary, Nelson Alapa, on Thursday in Asaba.

The APC G-37 described itself as an active body that comprises both former APC state chairmen and Non-members of the APC National Working Committee  2013 and 2021.

The group said it met  on April 10 and 12 to discuss and review the current political situation in the country.

It said, “We resolved that in all the states where governorship elections are due, we call for equity and justice for a level playing field for all aspirants.

“However, in Bayelsa State, the former governor-elect, David Lyon, should be allowed as APC sole candidate for governorship election, just like his ex-deputy, who made us lose  the governorship seat, was  allowed to be  the APC sole senatorial candidate for the just concluded 2023 general elections.

“This should serve as a compensation for the traumatic event associated with the agonising loss Lyon suffered as a result of the Supreme Court judgement nullifying his hard-earned victory.”

The G-37 said it was optimistic that the APC national leadership and members of the National Working Committee would conduct a free and fair primaries which the popularity and acceptability of emerging candidate will not be debatable to Bayelsans in particular and all party members in general.
