Felix Kwakye Ofosu denies GH¢78m gov’t communications budget claims

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State for Government Communications, has categorically denied claims circulating on social media alleging that he received a GH¢78 million budget specifically to manage government communications.

In a detailed video posted on social media, Mr Ofosu clarified that the figure being cited by opposition figures pertains exclusively to operational budgets allocated to state-run agencies under his supervision.

These include the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), the Information Services Department (ISD), and the Ghana News Agency (GNA).

“Let me be clear—no GH¢78 million has been allocated to me or my office personally,” Ofosu stressed. “The funds being discussed relate to the operational budgets of the GBC, ISD, and GNA, all critical institutions staffed by civil servants.”

Mr Ofosu further explained that due to the restructuring initiated by President Mahama, these institutions were placed under the Office of Government Machinery for streamlined budgeting purposes, rather than remaining under a separate Ministry of Information, which has since been dissolved.

He emphasised that the restructuring was part of a broader initiative by President Mahama to significantly reduce government expenditure. “President Mahama reduced the number of ministries from 30 to 23, thereby saving the government substantial amounts previously spent on ministerial allowances, vehicles, accommodation, and other operational costs,” he noted.

The minister also took aim at the opposition, particularly highlighting Dr Gideon Boako and Hon Abu Jinapor, accusing them of intentionally spreading misinformation. “These false allegations are deliberate attempts to distort facts and mislead the public,” Ofosu added. “We maintain complete transparency and will continue to clarify every falsehood put forth.”

Additionally, Mr Ofosu outlined the composition of his office clearly, stating that it comprises himself, his deputy Shamima Muslim, deputy secretary to the vice-president Ama Pratt, and a small administrative team of five individuals.

He highlighted that the team’s size underscores the government’s commitment to operating a lean and efficient administration, compared to the previous administration’s significantly larger staff complement.

He concluded by reassuring Ghanaians of the government’s ongoing commitment to fiscal responsibility and transparent governance. “This administration is firmly dedicated to prudent use of public resources and complete transparency. We will not allow misinformation to distract from the significant efforts we are making to run an efficient government,” Ofosu concluded.
