Female Traditional Leaders Association bemoans exclusion of Women in MMDCE shortlist

The Upper West Female Traditional Leaders Association, also known as Queen Mothers, has expressed disappointment over the exclusion of women from the shortlist of candidates for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the Upper West Region.

The Queens said, “In light of this, we respectfully call on His Excellency the President of the Republic of Ghana, through the relevant appointment authorities, to, as a matter of necessity, review the selection criteria to ensure the inclusion of women among those shortlisted for appointment as MMDCES”.

Speaking at a press conference held on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at the forecourt of the Wa Naa Palace, the Spokesperson of the Association acknowledged President Mahama’s efforts to increase female representation in his administration, with approximately 27% of women appointed so far.

However, they emphasized that the absence of women on the MMDCE shortlist raises concerns about the selection process’s inclusivity and commitment to fair representation.

“We have however, noted with dismay a widely circulated shortlist of successful candidates vetted for the positions of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCES) in the Upper West Region, dated January 29, 2025, which entirely excludes the eight courageous women who stepped forward for consideration,” she stated.

Boli Pognaa and Hajia Afisata Salia, who read the statement, urged the President to review the selection criteria and ensure the inclusion of women among those shortlisted for MMDCE appointments.

“We firmly believe that progress for women in governance is progress for the nation as a whole” ” she clearly stated.

They appealed for at least 30% of women to be appointed as government appointees into the Municipal and District Assemblies, citing the importance of gender inclusivity in local governance structures.

The Upper West Female Traditional Leaders Association encouraged competent women to remain resolute and assert their rightful place in governance and decision-making, drawing inspiration from Ghana’s first female Vice President.

“We urge them to remain resolute and continue asserting their rightful place in governance and decision-making”.
