Galamsey: We’ll hold Akufo-Addo solely responsible – Haruna Iddrisu

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will be solely held liable for the illegal small mining (Galamsey) menace, Tamale South Lawmaker Haruna Iddrisu.

He says attempt by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rope in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the flagbearer John Dramani Mahama will not work.

Speaking at the NDC’s campaign launch in Hamile, Lambusie constituency, Mr Iddrisu said, “When people talk about galamsey, they forget one important thing. They should read Article 268 of the Constitution: all mineral resources in Ghana are vested in the president. That president is Nana Akufo-Addo, not John Mahama. If it is not being managed well, if it is being handled in a way that destroys our livelihoods, we will hold Nana Addo solely responsible.

“So, they should stop dragging John Mahama’s name into it. We did not give John Mahama the power, authority, or mandate today to oversee the proper management of our mineral resources. That responsibility lies with Nana Akufo-Addo.”

His comments come in the wake of the blame game between the NDC and the NPP over who caused the galamsey menace.

The Majority and Minority Members of Parliament, during the extraordinary meeting of Parliament, blamed each other on the worsening state of the country’s water bodies.

The Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh Dompreh, for instance, accused the erstwhile National Democratic Government of causing more havoc to the environment than the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“If we are to look and investigate both sides of the House (NPP and NDC), I can tell you that the NDC polluted the water more than us. So, let’s get matters straight,” he said.

The Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson indicated that under his government even though security personnel have been deployed to help fight galamsey, the practice is still taking place.
