German-born Afua Kyerewaa looks forward to Black Queens debut

Josephine Afua Kyerewaa Bonsu is optimistic about adding her unique style to the Black Queens as she settles into the national team.

The German-born winger, whose father is Ghanaian and mother is German, earned her first call-up for the team’s training tour in Morocco under Head Coach Kim Lars Björkegren.

Kyerewaa, 25, was initially scouted for the senior women’s team by former Black Queens coach Nora Häuptle in September 2024.

Häuptle identified her potential while watching her in action for Carl Zeiss Jena during a Frauen-Bundesliga match against SC Freiburg, which ended 1-1.

Speaking about her early experience with the Black Queens, Kyerewaa expressed gratitude for the warm reception.

“The Queens made it easy for me. They welcomed me like family,” she said. Looking ahead to her potential debut, she is eager to contribute to the team’s success.

“Everyone brings different qualities, and I hope I can bring my own style of play. I have a different way of playing, and I hope to integrate that into the team so we can achieve great things together,” she added.

The Black Queens are on a 10-day training tour aimed at keeping the squad in top shape and allowing Coach Björkegren to assess and strengthen the team ahead of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

They will face Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses on Friday, February 21, at the Père Jègo Stadium before taking on club side AS FAR three days later.
