GFA cannot operate in a different world – Kofi Adams warns

Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has cautioned the Ghana Football Association (GFA) against operating in isolation from the government’s broader objectives, particularly regarding financial prudence and accountability.

Speaking on Luv FM after his swearing-in ceremony, he referenced President John Dramani Mahama’s directive that foreign travels be banned unless approved by the Chief of Staff, with restrictions on first-class travel.

“Even yesterday [Friday, February 7] at our swearing-in, what did His Excellency the President say? He said foreign travels are banned, and where necessary, they must be cleared with the Chief of Staff. Anyone cleared to travel should not fly first class—at best, business class.”

According to the Minister, this directive must apply across the board, including the GFA, to ensure alignment with the President’s vision of responsible governance.

“This should tell you that this is the mindset of the President, and every other person must develop the same mindset, including the GFA. The GFA cannot live in a different world when the President’s objectives and direction are clear.”

Adams emphasised the need for discussions with the football governing body to ensure a shared understanding of the government’s priorities.

“We will sit with them to have that understanding, and I believe they will not kick against any such proposition.”

Beyond travel policies, Adams did not shy away from addressing the decline of Ghanaian football, acknowledging that the relationship between management and fans is at an all-time low.

“Look, our sports—our football—is down. The trust level between management, fans, and followers is low.”

His comments suggest that his tenure will focus not just on cost-cutting and governance reforms but also on rebuilding confidence in Ghanaian football.
