Ghana Paralympic: Family of late coach denies absconding claims

The family of the late George Gyamfi Gyasi, former coach of Ghana’s Paralympic team, has vehemently denied allegations that they absconded after arriving in Norway to retrieve his body.

In a statement, Felix Kwame Gyasi, the deceased’s brother, described recent reports as “unguarded and unverified.”

He explained that Gyasi returned to Ghana from Turkey in February 2024 due to health issues and had planned to return to Europe but postponed his trip following a family bereavement.

Gyasi later travelled to Norway where he experienced a health crisis and subsequently passed away.

The family faced challenges in obtaining visas for relatives to arrange for the body’s repatriation and ultimately decided on cremation.

“His wife and close associate, who had planned to go and see to the body to be transported, were denied visas by the Norwegian embassy in Accra,” part of the statement read.

“The family consequently met and decided to have the body cremated and the remains sent to Ghana.”

“At no point did we, the Gyasis, send a delegation to Norway to arrange the body of the deceased.”

The family’s statement comes in response to claims made by the President of the National Paralympic Committee (NPC)-Ghana, Samson Deen, who alleged that four relatives sent to retrieve Gyasi’s body had absconded.

(NPC)-Ghana is under fire following the disappearance of several athletes who were supposed to participate in the Fjordkraft Bergen City Marathon in Norway.

The incident has sparked widespread criticism, especially after it was revealed that 11 athletes were unaccounted for and failed to register for the marathon.
