The Government of Ghana has defended its decision to appoint Samuel Adom Botchway as Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry, stating that the appointment does not breach any legal provisions.
This response comes as the Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG), declared a nationwide strike set for Thursday, February 20, 2025, in protest of Mr. Botchway’s continued stay in office.
CLOGSAG argues that his appointment is politically motivated and contradicts earlier government assurances that he would be removed.
Addressing the issue, government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu reaffirmed the administration’s position, stating that there is no legal violation in Mr. Botchway’s appointment. However, he noted that the government remains open to dialogue with CLOGSAG to resolve the impasse.
Meanwhile, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu has also dismissed concerns raised by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) regarding attacks on journalists during the John Mahama administration.
The GJA had held a press conference on Tuesday, February 18, condemning incidents of violence against media personnel, but the government spokesperson rejected the claims, describing them as unfounded.
CLOGSAG remains firm in its decision to proceed with industrial action unless its demands are met, urging all members to be on standby for the strike.
