Gov’t has secured enough fuel for reliable power supply – Felix Kwakye Ofosu

The Government of Ghana has assured the public that adequate fuel supplies have been secured to ensure a stable and reliable power supply, despite recent reports of intermittent outages in parts of the country.

Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, February 20, 2025, the Minister of State for Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to preventing power disruptions, citing proactive measures taken to maintain a steady energy supply.

“At the onset of this administration, we faced serious threats due to the closure of the West African Gas Pipeline and the prior government’s failure to provide adequate fuel for thermal power generation. We have since averted such crises by ensuring consistent fuel supplies,” he stated while briefing the media on the first cabinet meeting.

He further emphasized that the Energy Minister, John Jinapor, is actively monitoring the situation and will soon engage the public to provide updates and address concerns.

“It’s important that from time to time, the Energy Ministry engages the public to address any concerns they may have,” he added.

In a related development, the West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) has announced that 70% of its ongoing maintenance work has been completed, bringing the company closer to resuming gas supply to Tema.

The maintenance, which involves offshore pipeline cleaning and inspection, began on February 3, 2025, and is set to be fully completed by March 2, 2025.

Speaking at WAPCo’s site in the Tema Industrial Area, Engineer Benoni Owusu Ayeh, Operations and Maintenance Superintendent for Western Operations, assured the public that the project is on track.

“We believe that we should be able to complete this exercise before 2nd March. We’re within schedule and making progress,” he said.

The maintenance works are critical to ensuring the efficiency and safety of the gas pipeline, which plays a key role in Ghana’s energy supply stability.
