GRA probes shooting incident at Sogakope Customs Checkpoint

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) says it has initiated an investigation into the shooting incident at the Sogakope Customs checkpoint on Wednesday, February 19, which injured a bystander.

A statement issued by the GRA says its officers of the Customs Division stationed at the Sogakope checkpoint had received intelligence on a suspected uncustomed Mercedes-Benz E350 sedan being smuggled from Togo into Ghana.

In attempts to apprehend the vehicle and its occupants, the occupants abandoned the vehicle and started fleeing.

“In response, the team fired some warning shots. Unfortunately, a bystander was reported to have been struck by a stray bullet a few metres from the checkpoint. The injured person was rushed to the Sogakope Comboni Hospital for medical attention and is responding to treatment.”

The GRA assured that the incident is being investigated and that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the safety and well-being of persons affected.

It also sympathised with persons affected by the unfortunate incident which it said occurred in the course of protecting revenue at the country’s borders.
