Bechem United were unable to make it to their Boxing Day Ghana Premier League fixture against Basake Holy Stars at the Ampain Sports Arena, resulting in the home side being declared winners.
The Hunters’ difficulties began the day before, when their team bus broke down, leaving players and officials stranded. Despite efforts to repair the vehicle, it couldn’t be fixed in time.
The added challenge of the festive season, where transportation options were limited, made finding an alternative route impossible.
Bechem United promptly informed the Ghana Football Association (GFA) about their situation, attaching hotel receipts to demonstrate their preparedness.
They requested a postponement of the match, but the GFA refused the request.
Holy Stars and match officials were on hand at the stadium, but Bechem’s absence led to the forfeiture of the fixture. As per league regulations, Holy Stars were awarded three points and three goals.
Also on Thursday, Heart of Lions extended their lead at the top of the table with a 1-0 victory over Young Apostles at the Kpando Sports Stadium. Kwesi Pong scored the decisive goal late in the game, helping Lions maintain their strong title push. Aduana FC beat bottom-placed Legon Cities by a lone goal.
