Governance expert, Professor Enoch Antwi, has lauded the first list of deputy ministerial nominees by President John Mahama.
Speaking on 3FM’s Hot Edition with Alfred Ocansey on February 5, Professor Antwi expressed general satisfaction with the selections but noted that some appointments, particularly John Dumelo as Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, raised questions.
“I thought Otokunor, who has been involved in party structures, would have taken the position, but instead it went to John Dumelo, which has raised some questions,” Antwi remarked.
This comment highlighted the surprise many had at Dumelo’s appointment, especially given his background as a celebrity and his relatively recent involvement in agriculture.
Beyond Dumelo, Antwi pointed out a disconnect between the appointed ministers and grassroots party structures. He noted that many appointed individuals were not familiar with the districts they were expected to serve.
“People at the regional and branch levels are complaining about how many of these appointees don’t even know the districts, and this will create challenges in the future,” he said, stressing that understanding the local context is critical for effective governance.
Despite these concerns, Antwi acknowledged the importance of loyalty in leadership.
“In leadership, your choices reflect your judgment,” he emphasized, adding that if President Mahama feels comfortable with someone like John Dumelo, who owns a farm and aligns with modern agricultural practices, then that choice should be respected.
“It’s about what they can do for the ministry, not just where they come from,” Antwi explained.
As the new appointees take on their roles, Antwi emphasized that they must meet the expectations set by the president and the citizens of Ghana.
“The president has entrusted them with leadership positions, and they need to deliver,” he stated. “We must all be accountable for the country’s growth,” he said.
