It is too early to blame gov’t for attacks on journalists – Manasseh Azure

Investigative Journalist, Manasseh Azure has said government cannot be blamed for the recent attacks on journalists as it is early days yet.

Speaking in an interview on TV3’s New Day, Thursday, February 20, Manasseh who has also experienced threats in the past due to his profession noted that some of the attacks recorded did not even occur under the watch of the current government, hence it is illogical to hold the government accountable.

“If you put the situation in its proper context, I will think that it is too early not because it is too early to criticize John Mahama but on this particular issue, it is too early for anybody to say that the government is promoting or supervising or enhancing attacks on media.

“I have said these are three incidences involving seven journalists and one of the incidences didn’t even happen under his watch and if you have one week of an incidence happening within a week, some are not even up to a week yet, we want action but it is too early,” Manasseh noted.

His comments follow a press conference on Tuesday, February 18 2025 by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) where the President of the GJA, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour strongly condemned the Mahama administration over the rising number of assaults on journalists.

Dwumfour revealed that since the start of President Mahama’s administration, seven cases of journalist attacks have been recorded, describing the situation as “unprecedented.”

But Manasseh believes that the government can only be held responsible for such attacks if it becomes consistent and President Mahama takes no action to deal with the matter.

“If this incidence becomes a disturbing rhythm and the government or president doesn’t act or call the ministers responsible for the state agencies in this case the military to ensure accountability then we can say the President or government must be blame,” he added.
