The Member of Parliament for Amenfi Central Constituency, Joana Gyan Cudjoe, has reiterated the need for greater recognition and support for women in leadership roles.
Contributing to a statement on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, 12th March 2025, in commemoration of International Women’s Day 2025, she highlighted the importance of women’s participation in politics, business, and society.
This year’s celebration, themed “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment,” resonated with Hon. Cudjoe’s remarks as she emphasized that leadership is not defined by gender but by qualities such as vision, courage, service, and dedication—attributes she affirmed women possess in abundance.
“Mr. Speaker, I know it’s not easy for women in leadership. Whether in politics or business, society often relegates women to secondary roles. It is time we recognize women’s capabilities and give them equal opportunities in leadership positions,” she stated.
Madam Cudjoe underscored the persistent challenges women face in breaking through societal and institutional barriers, particularly in male-dominated fields like politics. She urged a change in mindset, calling on society to acknowledge and support the contributions of women in leadership.
She also addressed young girls, encouraging them to dream big and pursue their aspirations without limitations. “To young girls out there, I say dream big. You can be a doctor, a teacher, or a scientist; it’s all about your mindset,” she said.
Commending His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama and Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang for their commitment to women’s representation in governance, she noted: “The President and Vice President have demonstrated their dedication to ensuring women play a significant role in Parliament and beyond.”
Hon. Cudjoe’s contribution aligns with the global call for gender equality and the empowerment of women in leadership. Her message reinforces the need for inclusive policies and practices that enable women to thrive in all sectors.
This call by the legislator comes at the back of a similar call she made at Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City in Accra on Saturday, 8th March 2025, as a panelist at the International Women’s Day 2025 Dialogue.
The event, held under the distinguished patronage of Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, brought together leaders, policymakers, and advocates to discuss strategies for accelerating action on women’s rights, equity, and empowerment.
As a panelist alongside notable figures such as Nana Gyentsi Amoako X, Queen Boresah Fantevie, Peggy Ama Donkor, and Dr. Latifatu Mohammed, Hon. Cudjoe spoke on two critical aspects of women’s empowerment: increasing women’s participation in governance and ensuring they make a lasting impact as leaders.
She emphasized the need for reserved seats, leadership training, financial support, mentorship, and networking opportunities to empower women in leadership. “True progress can only be achieved when women are given equal opportunities to lead and influence policies that shape the future,” she stated.
The event attracted key dignitaries, including government officials, business leaders, and members of the diplomatic corps. It also showcased Ghana’s cultural heritage through vibrant displays of traditional music and dance.
Hon. Cudjoe expressed her gratitude to Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang and the organizers for creating a meaningful platform to advance women’s empowerment. She reaffirmed her commitment to championing policies that support women’s leadership and remains confident that, through collective effort, a more just and equitable future for women and girls can be achieved.
