Jamie Carragher falls short of the world’s top 2000 defenders- Sammy Kuffour

Ghanaian football legend Sammy Kuffour has launched a scathing attack on Jamie Carragher’s recent remarks about the African Cup of Nations (AFCON),claiming the ex-Liverpool stalwart wouldn’t even break into the world’s top 2000 defenders.

Carragher’s comments, made during a discussion about Mohamed Salah’s Ballon d’Or prospects, sparked widespread outrage among African football fans and former players.

The Liverpool legend stated that Salah’s inability to win a “major tournament” – in his view, the Euros, Copa America, or the World Cup – placed the Egyptian forward at a disadvantage in Ballon d’Or voting.

Carragher’s cavalier dismissal of AFCON, a tournament that holds a special place in the hearts of African nations, sparked outrage among many, especially former African players who have proudly represented their countries on the continental stage.

Kuffour, whose Ghanaian national team fell short of AFCON glory during his playing days, vented his frustration in a candid chat with Sporty Fm, bluntly asserting that Jamie Carragher wouldn’t even crack the list of the world’s top 2000 defenders.

“What has Jamie Carragher achieved? If he wasn’t born in Liverpool, he would not have had the chance to play for Liverpool. If we mention the best 2,000 defenders in the world, Jamie Carragher will not be part of them. He’s nothing. He just talks. He should be ashamed of himself.”

Despite Carragher’s subsequent clarification that he did not intend to be disrespectful, Kuffour believes the former Liverpool defender’s words were a slap in the face to African football and he must make amends with the African people.

“Africa has given us the best of the best. Africa has produced a Ballon d’Or winner. Jamie Carragher has to apologise to all African people because AFCON is not a normal tournament.”

Kuffour’s rebuke comes as the African football community continues to simmer with indignation over Carragher’s perceived slight.

The Ghanaian legend’s comments serve as a stark reminder of the pride and passion that AFCON embodies for African nations and players.
