Great Britain’s Jeremiah Azu recorded a personal best 6.49seconds to clinch the European Indoor Athletics Championship on Saturday.
Azu won by a whisker, with Sweden’s Larson coming second in 6.49seconds while teammate Andrew Robertson came third in 6.55seconds.
The crowd came out to see one of their own as Azu’s entry into the final was greeted by loud cheers in Apeldoorn, Netherlands.
Born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, Azu, was raised in Wales, where he has lived for the greater part of his 23 years.
The win marked Azu’s first ever individual crown.
After the race, he admitted extra motivation had been provided after his wife, Terri, gave birth to their son, Azaire, last week – even though it had led to a few sleepless nights.
“It’s a huge moment with his father becoming a European champion,” he said.
“He’s going to be able to look back on this and see what his dad was doing, which is an amazing feeling.
“But last week was rough,” added Azu, who joins a roll call of British winners of this title that includes Linford Christie, Colin Jackson, and Richard Kilty.
Azu, who is of Ghanaian descent, has now sealed his spot in the forthcoming World Indoor Championships and looks completely over the Olympic Games’ 100m false start in Paris.
