Kotoko and Hearts of Oak demand stronger security after fan’s tragic death

Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak have joined forces to push for improved security at league venues following the tragic incident at the Nana Koromansah II Stadium in Nsoatre.

The two clubs have announced plans to submit a joint position paper to the Ghana Football Association (GFA), advocating for stricter security measures in the Ghana Premier League.

Their move comes in response to the violent scenes that marred Kotoko’s match against Nsoatreman on matchday 19, leading to the unfortunate death of a devoted fan, Francis Frimpong, popularly known as Nana Pooley. The Ghana Police have since taken over investigations, with at least five individuals arrested in connection to the incident.

In a meeting between the management of both clubs, Kotoko and Hearts reaffirmed their commitment to tackling security concerns at match venues and ensuring the safety of fans.

“The two esteemed teams have underscored their unified dedication to tackling the pressing concern of security at match venues throughout the league. This announcement comes ahead of their anticipated engagement with the Executive Committee of the GFA on Thursday, 6th February 2025,” their joint statement read.

They described Nana Pooley’s death as a painful reminder of the urgent need for improved security at football games. The Hearts of Oak board also extended condolences to Kotoko, assuring them of their support in efforts to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak are urging the adoption of enhanced security protocols and other measures, and are eager to collaborate with all relevant stakeholders, including Government, the GFA, law enforcement agencies, and dedicated supporters. Their shared goal is to ensure that football remains a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved,” the statement added.

The clubs are calling on the GFA to take swift action on the recommendations outlined in their position paper, ahead of a scheduled meeting with all Premier League clubs on Thursday, February 6, 2025.
